Days 4 & 5 - Ha Long Bay

Yesterday was another magical day. Ha Long Bay was always going to be a highlight and it didn't disappoint. It would have been better if the weather had been better (overcast and misty) but really it didn't matter. The mist simply added to the mystique of the place.

Ha Long Bay is littered with limestone rocks jutting out of the water. It is very beautiful, and the sight of the other junks sailing / anchored amongst the rocks is very pleasant. The place has, in the words of Darryl Kerrigan from the movie The Castle, so much serenity.

We went kayaking across some of the bay into an enclosed lagoon. The way into and out of the lagoon is via a cave tunnel in the rock face. Once inside we were basically in this large pool of water inside one of the limestone rocks. Very beautiful, tranquil, and peaceful. I didn't take my camera with me in the kayak but I will try to find a photo on the web of what the lagoon looks like.

Today is Christmas Eve and the place is in party mode. We spent the day getting back from Ha Long Bay and walking around (and shopping in) Hanoi, as well as eating more wonderful food. Tonight we catch the overnight train to Hue, where we will spend Christmas Day.
